Hi! I'm Caitlyn, a nurse and midwife. I'm taking a month off in November to volunteer at Neema Village in Arusha, Tanzania.

Neema Village is a rescue center for abandoned, orphaned and at risk babies. They have a Baby Home, a Mothering Center, a free Day Care for MAP moms who have special needs babies and Safe Birthing Training for Traditional Maasai Birthers.

Their mission is:

Rescuing abandoned, orphaned, and at-risk babies
Reuniting children with extended families and promoting in-country adoptions
Restoring hope to women through education, business opportunities, parenting skills, day care assistance, and spiritual guidance
Relearning basic health/delivery procedures for traditional birthers.

Neema Village are also reducing maternal mortality through their Save the Mother's program that equips traditional Maasai birthing attendants with knowledge on safe birth and resolving the most common obstetric complications. Because their villages are so remote, the Maasai often have no access to maternal care and deliver their babies in mud huts with no medical professional present, only a traditional birthing attendant (TBA). When complications arise during delivery, mothers die preventable deaths simply because no one present knows how to save them.
