Help me carry out my school project as a volunteer in Tanzania!

Dear family, friends and anyone interested,

I will be volunteering for a humanitarian organization in Tanzania for almost 2 months starting February 2024. However, I need your support to help make it happen.

A little about me:

My name is Tim, I’m a 17 year old student in my 3rd year at Gymnasium Bäumlihof in Riehen/Basel in Switzerland. This year, the school gives us an opportunity with several weeks off to undertake and finance ourselves a personal project in an area of interest. The idea is to allow us to explore our interests and gain new skills through a personal experience .

How it came together:

First of all, I have to admit that finding a self-educational and fulfilling project for 2 months at my age sounded like a real challenge, mostly with the ideas I had in mind such as volunteering for an animal rescue organisation or helping a scientific team on biological researches. What could possibly be interesting enough and cheap enough so I could afford it? Who would value a teenager's competences and take the responsibility to guide him on a project? I started searching on the net, asking around and connecting with people. Yet this didn’t really seem to work and was quite tough, even with the coaching of my parents. This was a phase of real stress and deep doubts. We decided to put my search of the project on stand-by during the summer family vacation in Tanzania.

In Tanzania, I discovered a whole new continent and country with wild animals, cultures and people that filled my interest : everything was so different from anything I had experienced so far. The country is beautiful, but I also saw the lack of education and the poverty taking over and I felt I could contribute a little in many different ways. Despite my young age, people seem interested in my skills and I felt opportunities could be created and happen for real.

Completely by chance while visiting the African Art Gallery, I met Emmanuel, the founder of the association Moyo Mmoja (meaning „One Heart“ in Swahili) . He told me about his personal story and how the fact that a business man sponsored his education at university influenced his path. He was then determined to create this association to contribute himself in return to his community. I was very touched and highly motivated to help him.

The organization is based in the Manyara/Arusha Region and the philosophy behind it is about (1) interconnectedness among people (2) love for life and respectful cooperation with other humans and all that lives on and within our Earth (3) feeling what other people feel, leading with virtue and concern for others.

My local missions at Moto Mmoja :

I will be directly participating in the following projects:

- Education on nature preservation, planting of trees, protection of buffer zones, in general the environmental protection

- Education on water-usage and preservation, building of wells for remote villages with limited access or unhealthy water

- The last project is a project I came up with: IT education for teachers and young students to help them for their future. This is a project I want to start and develop with Emmanuel who was also thinking about it as he recently collected used laptop parts.

How your contribution would help:

While I am excited to go on this journey, the costs associated with travel, accommodation, and mission-related expenses are important. A good part of the money needed I have gotten through my savings, a summer job and window-cleaning in my neighborhood this year as well as some baby sitting occassionally. I also hope for a positive response to my sponsoring requests to the sustainability departments of big Swiss companies .

However, as of today I am still far from covering all my costs:

- Travel Expenses: Flight to and from Tanzania, transportation within Tanzania

- Accommodation: Providing a place to stay while I work on these projects

- Mission-Related Costs: Supplies, equipment, insurances (believe me, my parents insist on that one )

- Community Support: Direct contributions to the communities we serve, including funding for educational materials, and resources to carry out initiatives (example: buying laptop-parts for better IT-Education)

By the time I came back home in August, I quickly understood it would not be so easy to organize at distance my way back to Tanzania and the project. I am lucky I could count on the support of a few people who encouraged and helped me with my searches and return:

Ich werde ab Februar 2024 fast zwei Monate lang für eine humanitäre Organisation in Tansania freiwillig tätig sein. Ich brauche jedoch Unterstützung, damit dies zustande kommen kann.

Über mich:

Mein Name ist Tim, ich bin ein 17 Jahre alter Schüler in meinem 3. Jahr am Gymnasium Bäumlihof in Riehen/Basel. In diesem Schuljahr gibt uns die Schule mehrere Wochen schulfrei, um ein eigenständiges Bildungsprojekt, vorzugsweise in Europa, durchzuführen. Dies ermöglicht uns, Erfahrungen zu sammeln und uns selber weiterzubilden. Es wird auch gefordert, dass wir das Projekt selbst finanzieren.

Wie es zusammen kam:

Zunächst einmal klang die Suche nach einem weiterbildenden und erfüllenden Projekt für 2 Monate in meinem Alter wie eine echte Herausforderung, hauptsächlich mit den Ideen, die ich im Kopf hatte. Mir gefielen beispielsweise Freiwilligenarbeit für eine Tierrettungsorganisation oder die Unterstützung eines wissenschaftlichen Teams für biologische Forschung. Was könnte ein interessantes Projekt sein, welches ich mir noch leisten kann? Wer würde die Kompetenzen eines Jugendlichen wertschätzen und die Verantwortung übernehmen, ihn bei einem Projekt zu leiten?Mit Hilfe meiner Eltern begann ich im Internet zu suchen, Leute zu fragen und mich mit ihnen in Verbindung zu setzen. Doch das schien nicht wirklich zu funktionieren und war ziemlich schwer, trotz der mithilfe meiner Eltern. Dies war eine Phase von Stress und Zweifeln für mich. Also haben wir uns entschlossen, das Projekt für des Sommerurlaubs in Tansania auf Stand-by zu setzen.

In Tansania entdeckte ich einen ganz neuen Kontinent mit Tieren, Kulturen, Menschen und Möglichkeiten, die mich interessierten. Das Land ist wunderschön, aber ich sah auch den Bildungsmangel und die Armut. Trotz meines junges Alters, schienen die Leute sehr interessiert an meinen Fähigkeiten und ich hatte das Gefühl, dass sich daraus eine reale Möglichkeit ergeben könnte.

Ganz zufällig traf ich Emmanuel Saitoti vor Ort, den Gründer der Organisation Moyo Mmoja (was auf Swahili „Ein Herz“ bedeutet), und er erzählte mir von seiner persönlichen Geschichte: Ein Geschäftsmann, der Emmanuel die Ausbildung an der Universität finanzierte, ermöglichte ihm diese Hilfsorganisation aufzubauen und seiner Gemeinschaft zu unterstützen. Ich war sehr begeistert und wollte helfen.

Über die lokalen Projekte:

Die Organisation hat ihren Sitz in der Region Manyara/Arusha, und ihre Philosophie dreht sich um (1) die Vernetzung zwischen den Menschen, (2) die Liebe zum Leben und die respektvolle Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Menschen, und (3) das Mitgefühl für andere Menschen.

Ich werde direkt an folgenden Projekten teilnehmen:

- Bildung über Naturschutz, Pflanzung von Bäumen, Schutz von Pufferzonen, sowie allgemeiner Umweltschutz

- Bildung über Wassernutzung, Bau von Brunnen für abgelegene Dörfer mit eingeschränktem oder ungesundem Zugang zu Wasser

- Das letzte Projekt ist ein Projekt, das ich selbst entwickelt habe: IT-Bildung für Lehrer und Jugendliche, um ihnen für ihre Zukunft zu helfen. Dies ist ein Projekt, das ich mit Emmanuel beginnen und entwickeln möchte, vor allem, da er auch vor kurzem darüber nachgedacht hat und gebrauchte Laptop-Teile gesammelt hat.

Wie deine Spende helfen kann:

Auch wenn die Vorfreude auf die Reise nach und nach steigt, sind die Kosten, die mit Reisen, Unterkunft und Mission-bezogenen Ausgaben verbunden sind, wichtig. Einen großen Teil des benötigten Geldes habe ich durch Sommerjobs und Fensterreinigung in meiner Nachbarschaft in diesem Jahr bekommen, aber es deckt noch nicht alles ab. Zudem hoffe ich auch, auf positive Rückmeldungen von den Nachhaltigkeitsabteilungen grosser Schweizer Firmen zu meinen Sponsoringanfragen.

Momentan habe ich die Kosten noch nicht voll gedeckt:

- Reisekosten: Flug nach Tansania, Transport innerhalb Tansanias

- Unterkunft: Bereitstellung eines Aufenthaltsortes, während ich an diesen Projekten arbeite

- Missionskosten: Vorräte, Ausrüstung, Versicherungen (meine Eltern bestehen darauf)

- Gemeinschaftliche Unterstützung: Direkter Beitrag zu den Gemeinden, denen wir helfen, einschließlich der Finanzierung von Lernmaterialien und Ressourcen zur Durchführung von Initiativen (Beispiel: Kaufen von Laptop-Teilen für bessere IT-Ausbildung)

Aidez-moi à réaliser mon projet scolaire en tant que bénévole en Tanzanie!

Je vais partir en tant que bénévole pour une organisation humanitaire en Tanzanie pendant près de 2 mois à partir de février 2024. Cependant, j'ai besoin de votre soutien pour m'aider à réaliser ce projet.

Quelques mots sur moi :

Je m’appelle Tim, j ai 17 ans et je suis élève en 3e année au Gymnase/Lycée Bäumlihof à Riehen/Bâle en Suisse. En nous dégageant plusieurs semaines sans cours, l'école nous offre l'opportunité cette année de mettre en place et financer nous mêmes un projet dans un domaine qui nous intéresse. L'idée est de nous permettre d'explorer nos centres d intérêts et d acquérir de nouvelles compétences à travers une expérience personnelle.

Les débuts de l’histoire :

Tout d'abord, je dois vous avouer que pour un adolescent de 16 ans, trouver et financer seul un projet éducatif intéressant pour 2 mois est un véritable défi voire même un parcours du combattant… surtout compte tenu des idées qui étaient les miennes telles que faire du bénévolat pour une organisation de protection des animaux ou assister une équipe scientifique dans des travaux de recherche en biologie. Qu'est-ce qui pourrait être intéressant, tout en étant assez bon marché pour que je puisse financier moi même mon projet ? Qui voudrait utiliser les compétences d'un adolescent encore à l'école et serait prêt à prendre la responsabilité de le guider sur un projet?

J'ai commencé à chercher sur internet, à poser des questions autour de moi et à entrer en contact avec des gens et organisations dans ce domaine. Malgré ma motivation et l’aide de mes parents, c'était assez difficile et ne semblait pas vraiment fonctionner. C'était une phase de stress et de gros doutes. Nous avons alors décidé que je ferai une pause estivale dans mes recherches le temps de nos vacances en famille en Tanzanie.

En Tanzanie, j’ai découvert un tout nouveau continent et pays avec des animaux sauvages, des cultures et des populations différents de tout ce qui m avait déjà été donné de rencontrer jusqu’ici. Le pays est magnifique mais j'ai aussi vu le manque d'éducation et la pauvreté grandissante et il m a semblé que je pouvais apporter ma petite contribution. Malgré mon jeune âge, les gens étaient intéressés par mes compétences et une multitude d’idées s'offraient à moi et semblaient pour la première fois de l'ordre du possible.

C’est par hasard, en visitant une galerie d'art africain, que j’ai rencontré Emmanuel, le fondateur de l’association Moyo Mmoja (qui signifie « Un Coeur » en Swahili), il m’a raconté son histoire personnelle et comment le fait qu'un homme d’affaires ait financé ses études universitaires lui a donné envie de créer cette association pour contribuer à son tour à aider sa communauté. J'étais très touché et je savais que je voulais et pouvais l‘aider.

Mes missions au sein de Moyo Mmoja:

Je participerai directement aux projects suivants :

- Enseignement du respect et de la conservation de la nature, plantation d'arbres, la protection des zones dites “tampon” et de manière générale la protection de l'environnement

- Éducation sur l'utilisation et la protection de l'eau, construction de puits pour villages isolés avec accès limité à l eau potable ou accès à des eaux impropres a la consommation.

- J'ai eu moi même l'idée du dernier projet : cours d informatique pour des professeurs et des jeunes dans le cadre d'un cursus d apprentissage professionnel. C'est un projet que je veux initier et développer avec Emmanuel (il y pensait lui même depuis qu’ il avait commencé à récupérer des pièces d'ordinateur usées).

En quoi votre contribution peut-elle m'aider ?:

Bien que je sois ravi de ce séjour, les coûts associés aux trajets en avion, à l'hébergement et aux dépenses liées à mes missions restent importants. J'ai déjà réuni une partie de l'argent dont j'ai besoin grâce à mes economies, un job d'étudiant cet été et des travaux de nettoyage des fenêtres des habitants de mon quartier. Je fais aussi parfois du baby-sitting. J'espère également recevoir des réponses favorables à mes demandes de sponsoring auprès des départements de Responsabilité Sociale de grandes entreprises suisses.

Toutefois à ce jour, je suis toujours loin de couvrir la totalité de mes frais:

- Dépenses de voyage: Vols A/R Suisse/ Tanzanie, transports en Tanzanie

- Hébergement: Un logement sur place pendant que je travaille sur ces projets

- Coûts liés à la mission: équipements, assurances (croyez moi mes parents insistent là-dessus )

- Soutien communautaire : contribuer directement aux communautés que nous servons, y compris le financement de matériels éducatifs et les ressources nécessaires pour mener des initiatives (exemple: achat de pièces détachées ou d ordinateurs laptop pour les cours en informatique

Votre soutien financier peut m'aider à couvrir ces dépenses et me permettre de participer activement à chacune de mes missions.
