Hi everyone,
This week, my world turned upside down
At 9:30pm, the police knocked on my in-laws’ door and told them my partner had died in Spain. They said he’d been identified by his name and passport number. Except… my partner was alive. He was literally in the bath at the time.
After a terrifying night of confusion, we finally learned what happened. Back in 2022, someone was arrested in Barcelona and gave Spanish police my partner’s name and passport details. Since then, that person has committed crimes in Spain. The Guardia were tracking him under two identities, one of them being my partner.
This week, that person sadly passed away. But when the authorities identified him, they genuinely believed it was my partner. That’s why the police turned up at his parents’ door with devastating news.
Now, the British Consulate has advised us that we’ll need to hire a Spanish lawyer in the coming months to run a criminal record check against my partner’s name. This is the only way to make sure none of those crimes are linked to him, and to protect him from future problems, especially when travelling.
But this comes with legal costs that we never imagined we’d have to face. And because this situation is so unusual, we’ve been told it’s something we’ll have to pay for ourselves.
We’re asking for your help to cover the legal fees needed to clear my partner’s name and ensure his/our future isn’t affected by this nightmare. Even the smallest donation would mean the world to us. And if you can’t donate, simply sharing our story will help us more than you know.
Any funds raised above the legal costs will be used to do something special with my partner’s parents, who went through this trauma first hand when the police knocked on their door. We’d love to give them a positive memory after such a surreal and distressing experience.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, it still doesn’t feel real that this all happened this week. But with your support, we can finally set things right.
