Help Me Build A Playground!

'Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart'...

In August, I will be going to Uganda and spend one month volunteering there to help the UK charity East African Playgrounds build a school playground.

About EAP:

'East African Playgrounds is a charity that believes that alongside education, children need access to play activities to reach their full potential. We envisage a world where all children have access to areas where they can explore, learn, develop and play.  Since 2009 we have gone from eight university students building one playground in a summer to a dedicated team of UK staff and volunteers, 150 student volunteers each summer and a Ugandan playground building team who run Africa’s only Playground building and training yard which builds 13 playgrounds a year and trains young adults to become welders and builders.'

You may have guessed that children in Uganda have an incredibly tough life... War, trafficking and enslavement are some of the issues most Ugandan children have to overcome each day. To them, play may seem more like a privilege than a right and even if they could engage in it, there wouldn't be many safe places to do so.

Let's change that. Help me achieve my goal and let's offer Ugandan children the chance to play, be happy and grow healthy so they can have a shot at a better life.
Ultimately, a global ripple effect will be created; the skills I will acquire by manually building a playground are transferable and will be passed on to UK communities through free training.  Let the grassroots playground-building movement begin!

A Bit About Me

Play is one of the only things we ALL have in common - we were all children and we all played. But do we realise the degree to which our play experiences shape us as individuals? I'd like to think I do and I believe it is that particular awareness which drove me to become a very happy playworker over 10 years ago.
I genuinely love working with children and regard it as my greatest passion. Offering children the opportunity to experience quality play and seeing how it nurtures them, really makes me tick; to the point where, it's safe to say, I can't see myself doing anything other than playwork, be it hands-on practice, designing play environments or even training others to become very happy playworkers.
When I'm not playing, I meditate, take pictures, drink lots of tea, read quirky facts and listen to great music.

Currently enjoying studying more Playwork at Leeds Beckett University, working for Leeds Play Network and sitting on the Yorkshire Play board of directors.

Your support with my volunteering project is much needed and greatly appreciated. The money will be invested in the project and the results are visible and tangible.  If leaving your contact details, you will be updated at the end of the project to see exactly where the money has gone and what impact it had on children.

Become a play supporter and help me and EAP build an amazing
playground. :)

Celebrate play in every way and let's make some children happy!
