I’m reaching out to ask for your support for someone who is working incredibly hard to build a better future for herself—my dear friend Mayira. Mayira is an Afro-Borikwa trans woman and a first-generation college student, currently working towards her BA in Art History with dreams of becoming a video game designer. She’s a passionate and determined person who is deeply committed to her education and personal growth, as well as her community, but right now, financial hardship is threatening her future.

For Mayira, the stress of financial instability has been overwhelming, making it hard to focus on her studies. Recently she moved, and transferred to a store closer to her new place, which made a huge difference in her ability to manage her time and commute. Unfortunately, her employer pulled her from that store unexpectedly and reassigned her back to her old store, which is much farther away. Despite having worked with her employer for years, they suddenly cut her hours as well, making it nearly impossible to make rent each month.

She’s been searching for new job opportunities for months, but finding a position that respects and values her as a trans woman of color has been incredibly challenging. Even with these obstacles, she stays committed to her goals because she knows her education and future are worth investing in.

That’s where you come in! With your help, we can ease some of the financial burden she’s carrying. Mayira needs $2,000 to cover rent for the next two months, which will allow her to focus on her studies and self-care. The remaining funds will go towards securing updated ID documents following her successful name change—an important safety net as Trump takes office in January.

Mayira is in a transformative moment of growth, and this support will give her the peace of mind she needs to focus on her education, continuing her medical transition, and building the future she wants (and deserves!). Her birthday is in December, and it would be such a meaningful gift for her to not have to stress about rent for the final months of the year.
