Help Maya's Family Secure Stable Housing

Hi, my name is Maya and I’m a hardworking, disabled, and chronically ill auntie. My family and I are in the middle of an emergency housing crisis. We (myself, my sister, her husband, and their ten-year-old daughter) have been without permanent housing since January—when the four of us moved into a hand-me-down camper where we did everything we could to make things work.

Then my brother-in-law lost his trucking job. All of us found temporary work, doing our best to make ends meet while also seeking stable employment. My brother-in-law had several job interviews, and we thought things had finally turned around but then disaster struck again: tariffs brought trucking hiring to a virtual standstill, then our camper axle broke, taking the wheel bearings and brakes along with it. Repair costs were estimated to be $6-12K (depending on the sourcing of parts) and take 4-9 weeks (again depending on the sourcing of parts), during which we would have to pay hotel costs and store our belongings. Insurance refused to pay, claiming “mechanical failure” wasn’t covered under our policy. Faced with an impossible choice, we made the difficult decision to junk our only home.

Now we’re living in tents, dealing with hot days and cold nights which are wreaking havoc on my autoimmune condition and mobility. My family and I are continuing to do the best we can to work temporary jobs. We know better is on the horizon, but we need support getting there.
