Hello, I'm Matthew Bednar, and I am asking for your support of my Eagle Scout project.
I've partnered with the Neighborhood Garden Project at Emmanuel Episcopal Church to plant several native trees: bald cypress, river birch, and live oak. The need is significant, and the number of trees we plant will be based on the amount of funds that we raise. This is more than a beautification project. Emmanuel has opened its grounds to serve the community through gardening, education, and fellowship. By working alongside the Garden Project, I'm supporting a space where people of all ages can gather, grow food, and grow in relationship with each other, with creation, and with purpose.
The trees I've chosen were selected with purpose and placement in mind. The cypress and birch will be planted in low-lying areas that naturally collect rainwater. Their deep, fibrous roots help stabilize the ground, reduce erosion, and act as natural filtration by absorbing and breaking down pollutants in stormwater. They will improve the site's natural ability to manage water runoff, reduce the risk of flooding near the garden, and improve soil quality.
The live oak on the west side of the garden will serve a dual purpose: to offer protection from the afternoon sun and to create a gathering place for garden volunteers, church members, and community participants. Shade trees like live oaks play an essential role in lowering local temperatures, improving air quality, and offering relief to those who spend hours outside tending the land. Over time, this oak will become a symbol of endurance and care - a place where people will rest, share stories, and build deeper connections.
