My mother's name is Mary. Thank you everyone for patiently listening to my story.

My mother is Mary.

She lost everything she had worked for in a matter of hours from a fire on February 10th 2026. Almost 30 years ago, she came to America as a single mother raising two children in a foreign country, speaking a new language, and starting from scratch, it wasn't easy for her.
My mother did all sorts of jobs, from working in a shrimp processing plant, sewing, and finally becoming a nail technician. My mother works an average of 12 hours a day, from early morning until late at night, juggling work and supporting my younger sibling's education.
We lived in a small, government-subsidized apartment. I decided not to go to university but to follow my mother and learn the nail technician trade.
My younger brother is very intelligent, so he wanted to go to university and become a dentist.
My mother worked hard day and night, and eventually saved enough money to buy a nail salon.
Before the nail salon opened, we didn't have enough money to put up a sign and had to climb dangerously to hang it ourselves without any tools. In the early days of opening the shop, there weren't many customers. My younger brother worked after school. In the evenings, we sewed clothes with Mom. Many nights we returned home at 1 a.m.
We work diligently, treating our customers with friendliness and sincerity. Gradually, our customer base grew, and we gained many loyal customers who love and support us.
My mother was a strong woman; whatever men could do, she would strive to do it herself.
And my mother never gave up on anything.

My mother wanted my younger brother to focus on his studies, so she paid for all his tuition during those years. And her efforts paid off. My brother was always a top student and achieved many high honors at school. And finally, after many years, my brother became a dentist, just as he had wished.
After many years of receiving love and support from customers, my mother finally saved enough money to buy a beautiful house where we could eat together, watch movies, and create countless memories every weekend.
I got married and have three children. My younger brother comes home every weekend to look after the kids. Every time he comes home, he buys lots of food so the whole family can eat together. When my brother was still in school, he only bought things from the cheapest places to save money for my mother .
But ever since my younger brother became a dentist, he's always chosen to buy the best and tastiest food for the family. He's also well-liked at work. So all of my mother's hard work has truly been worthwhile.

It was a beautiful sunny day. My three children were running around the house and garden, shouting with joy. We ate together, laughed together, and played with our dog, Zoe, and our cat, Sushi. Everything was wonderful.

My mother and I were working when neighbors on both sides of the house called to say that my mother's house was on fire. Both neighbors mentioned that they saw the roof on fire first then the whole upper floor just collapsed.
We rushed home and were truly terrified; the fire was enormous, and everything was being consumed by flames right before our eyes, in utter helplessness. Our family dog was also burned to ashes along with the house.
A house that just yesterday was filled with laughter has now been reduced to a pile of ashes. Everything was burned to ashes in the fire; not a single object remained intact or recognizable. My throat tightened, my heart shattered.
The house burned down, along with everything , including a lot of nail salon supplies. My mother is now practically penniless, just like she was nearly 30 years ago.
My mother appeared strong and tough, but deep down she was in pain that she didn't dare reveal because she didn't want us to worry. My mother has never asked for help, nor has she ever wanted anyone's pity.
The next day, my mother still went to work, and while working, she smiled as if nothing had happened. My mother said that at this moment, only work could help her stop thinking, and more importantly, it allowed her to start over and pay for the losses. I told her to cry her heart out and then move on.
I told my mother that this is when she needs help the most, and that many people who love and support her will lend a hand. I believe that the unity and love of the community, of neighbors, and of our dear customers will make a difference. This is not the time to be shy or proud. When one hand needs help, there will be other hands ready to lend a hand. That is true humanity.
Thank you everyone for patiently listening to my story.
My mother is Mary.
And this is a completely true story! Hattiesburg, night of February 10, 2026
