My neighbor Mark is in a wheelchair. And for the second Saturday, I saw him sitting alone in his driveway. Mark explained he had hit a curb with his 20-year-old, wheelchair modified van. This week he got the word that the cost of the repairs would be beyond the value of the old vehicle. Mark’s old van was totaled. The family only carried liability coverage simply because they could not afford full coverage insurance.

Mark has a wife and 8-year-old twins. He lives on a fixed income. He doesn’t have the finances to afford a car payment, and a used van that is modified to accommodate Mark’s needs would cost approximately $32,000. Mark can’t get out of his wheelchair. He cannot get in somebody else’s car, or use a different wheelchair. Without a correctly adapted vehicle Mark cannot go anywhere. As neighbors, we want to help Mark become mobile again.
