Hi, my name is Marissa Hogan a DSP at a Behavior health facility and currently living in the states. I was born and raised on the once-beautiful island of Jamaica, where it’s part of our culture to give the shirt off our backs to those in need.
The island I still call home — Jamaica — has grown almost unrecognizable, especially around Culloden Whitehouse in Westmoreland, where I hold my most cherished memories with family and friends.
My mother passed away last December, and I inherited the house she left behind. In that home, my younger sister (just 18) and my older brother, who lives with an intellectual and developmental disability (IDD), had been living — but now the house is in ruins from Hurricane Melissa. This hurricane didn’t just impact my family; it devastated my entire community.
Hurricane Melissa came with a singular mission: to destroy everything in her path — and tragically, she succeeded. The storm ripped off roofs, flooded homes, and destroyed lives. The land we once knew — with its blue seas and lush green trees — is now muddy water and barren of trees.
My goal is simple: to support my family, and the community that shaped me into the woman I am today.
With your help, no matter how big or how small the contribution, we can:
provide food, clean water, essential supplies, and medical supplies to my family and others in this community deeply affected by this disaster.
Every dollar you donate will go directly toward helping my family and others in my community recover, rebuild, and regain some semblance of stability after this disaster.
You may ask: “Why does this matter? Why should I donate?”
Here’s why:
Jamaica has given so much to the world — from legends like Bob Marley, the fastest man on earth Usain Bolt, and let’s not forget our mouth-watering food and our heartfelt hospitality. We may be a small dot on the map, but we’ve made a big difference in the world.
Yes — the government is helping, and yes — they will continue to assist. But what we need now isn't long-term recovery. There are family members and community members who need food now, water now, essential supplies now.
With that said: Jamaica needs your support. We are a country rich in culture, talent, and tenacity — and we stand ready to rebuild with your help.
