Help Mama Joyce Get a New Computer!

Dear Friends, Family, and Community,

We are reaching out to you today to support a truly remarkable person: Joyce Carpenter, lovingly known to many as Mama Joyce. Joyce has dedicated over 45 years of her life to making a significant impact within the Toronto urban Indigenous community. A member of Alderville First Nation, her unwavering commitment to care, advocacy, and love has and continues to have an impact on so many people.

Joyce's incredible journey includes years of service in Indigenous and Northern Affairs. She has also worked with organizations such as the Native Women’s Resource Centre of Toronto and Toronto Council Fire. Now retired, Joyce remains a tireless advocate for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWGT2S+). Her advocacy is deeply personal, as she honors the memory of her daughter, Patricia, who was tragically murdered in 1992, just two weeks shy of her 15th birthday. Joyce shares Patricia’s story to keep her memory alive and to bring awareness to the MMIWG2S+ crisis.

Joyce has mobilized education throughout the city regarding the importance of justice for MMIWGT2S+. She co-founded the Shades of Our Sisters exhibit and actively participates in grassroots initiatives aimed at addressing this critical issue. Beyond her advocacy work, Joyce consistently works to support unhoused Indigenous community members, checking in on Elders, and opened her door to youth to live with her so they could attend high school.She also initiated food banks at Toronto Council Fire and the Native Women’s Resource Centre, ensuring that those in need have access to essential resources.

Joyce has mobility issues and therefore relies on her computer to stay connected with friends, family, and her community. Her current computer is very outdated and not functioning properly at all. We are asking for your help to raise funds for a new computer so that Mama Joyce can continue her advocacy work and maintain those important connections.
