After raising two kids, Tom and Mary decided to sell their family home in Walnut Creek, CA, downsize, and start the next phase of their lives.
Unfortunately, they are now the victims of online scammers who stole the proceeds from the sale of Tom’s and Mary’s home, the compromise taking place when they unknowingly had wired it to the scammer’s bank account back east (based on fraudulent wire instructions that appeared to come from the title company). In the blink of an eye, the majority of their nest egg was gone. Like most of us, they had no idea that real estate wire fraud has taken literally millions of dollars from innocent people who worked for years to build equity in their home, their largest asset, only to have it stolen by predators over the Internet.
By working with law enforcement and their own bank, they were able to recover half of their stolen funds. Lawyers give them a 50/50 chance at best to get back the other half, about $300,000. Tom and Mary have helped hundreds of family members, friends and strangers in their times of need. They never ask for help for themselves, so we decided to start this Go Fund Me campaign on their behalf.
