Hi, I'm Emmy (the soul formerly known as Maria-Elena), and if you know me, you know me, you probably know I've always wanted to go and make a difference in Africa.
Almost magically, last summer, I met two ladies who have been working with a centre in Kenya for many years and taking groups over for a Knowledge Share program for the past 6 years. They had a booth at my daughter's first 5K run. Instantly, I felt drawn to what they were doing and their incredible energy.
The more I learned about the Wema centre in Kenya, and the Kutana Wema program to exchange knowledge so that we all can grow together, the more I knew this was the trip for me.
The ladies want to make sure we are making a difference in a way that helps the people at Wema, not coming as the White saviours. The Wema centre tells them what they need. That was always key for me.
The Wema centre is a local NGO, empowering children and communities in Mombasa, Kenya since 1993. their mandate is to rescue, rehabilitate, and reintegrate street-connected children into mainstream society.
I decided to join them on their 2026 trip during March Break.
Part of the trip requirements is raising $1000USD now as a donation to the Wema centre. Here's where you can help. I've already raised $600 USD, but I would like to donate $2000 USD instead of the minimum $1000,.
If you are able to give $20, $50, $100 or any amount that feels good to you, I would be eternally grateful. If you would be willing to share this fundraiser, that would also be amazing. I will also gladly accepts good intentions, prayers, and wishes. If you are willing and able to help in 1, 2, or all 3 of these ways thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Something you'll often see me write in social media posts is, "You are not alone. We are in this together." This is one of those situations. Let's make a big impact by each doing what we can.
For everyone who donates, I will write a reflection and summary of my learnings and how your money is helping out at Wema upon my return.
Thank you for even reading and considering. Thank you for helping my lifelong dream come true. Thank you for helping Wema and the children and communities they serve. Sending so much love and gratitude to you.
Emmy
