Hello there! My name is Kenny Lin, and my cousin, Kevin, has been helping people in the front lines fight COVID-19 by 3D printing plastic face shields. Kevin understands the situation and production processes way better than I do, so here's a message from him:
"There has been a huge uptick in COVID-19 cases in the US and one of the biggest problems medical facilities in the US are facing is a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE). This is important and relevant because if nurses and doctors become sick, our healthcare system will not be able to provide enough time or resources to treat everyone.
A lot of us face shield makers have come together as an international community to try and help produce items that hospitals need right now. This is not a long term solution, but it certainly serves as a stop-gap measure to ensure that front liners have what they need right now until factories for these PPEs ramp up production.
Currently, I’m printing with one printer and I’ve printed close to 200 shields & delivered 112 of them to hospitals, senior homes, and grocery stores.
I’m currently assembling another printer to hopefully double my production capacity to help distribute more of these face shields to everyone.
This effort has been personally funded up to now by the generosity of my neighbors on Nextdoor, who have donated the initial batch of materials such as the plastic sheets.
How You Can Help Through This GoFundMe Campaign
All of the money we receive from this GoFundMe campaign will be used to increase my production of plastic face shields, and that will help alleviate the shortage of PPEs for front liners in the San Carlos/San Francisco area. Below are the materials I'm utilizing for production and their respective costs for your reference:
- Clear plastic sheets (100pcs): $18
- 1kg of filament: $30
- 28 yards of buttonhole elastic (good for 100 shields): $50
- 4kg of filament : $110
- Creality3D Ender 3 Kit to multiply production output: $180
If you’d like to support my cause or other similar causes, donating any amount can help alleviate the burden of material costs for the makers like me.
Other Ways You Can Help
If you have a 3D printer, start printing and distributing these face shields as there’s a lot of need for them. If you can sew, you can help by sewing cloth masks. Joann is providing free fabric and templates to help people make more masks for everyone. If you’d like to support your local healthcare facilities, find people doing similar projects that operate in your community and help. In this fast-paced pandemic, more help is better than less.
Most importantly, please follow the guidelines set out by your local authorities around social distancing, quarantine period, and stay-at-home orders. That will slow down the spreading of the virus tremendously and will help all of us get out of this crisis sooner.
Thanks for your time and please stay safe!"
