Maddex, lovingly known as Maddie, will turn 10 in October. He has a twin sister, Joslin, and siblings Rush, Nadia, and Naomi. Maddie experienced a non-fatal drowning before he was two, which left him unable to move and dependent on a g-tube for feeding. This year has been especially hard—he’s spent more time in the hospital than at home, and now faces surgery to remove his spleen after six weeks in the hospital.

Maddie’s mom, who is working toward her nursing degree, has been by his side at the hospital, while her boyfriend cares for the other four children at home. Because Maddie is hospitalized, his mom is no longer receiving the pay she depended on for his care. The family is struggling to keep up with electric and gas bills, and their stove recently broke, making it impossible to prepare home-cooked meals. The kids are relying on microwave meals, and without gas, they can’t take hot showers—boiling water for baths is a challenge without a working stove. The electric is at risk of being shut off, adding to the stress and uncertainty.
