Meet Lulu - A Humble Hero in Puebla!!
Lulu is one of the most inspiring, generous people we've ever met. She's a mother, a grandmother, a faithful woman of God, and is the heart of her family. She's also one of the hardest workers we know - despite earning less than $20 a day cleaning houses and traveling over an hour by bus just to reach her jobs.
Our family (David, Angela, and Griffin) met Lulu when we lived in Puebla, Mexico for three years during COVID. She worked as our housekeeper but quickly became much more - a friend, a support, and eventually family. She helped us create a home while living abroad, and we've stayed close even after returning to the US.
Lulu came from a very poor family and has had limited formal education. She once told us a story from her childhood; she and her siblings (she has over 10) were walking through a field at night and saw lights moving across the sky. She was amazed - she had never seen an airplane before and thought they were UFOs. It's a story that reminds us just how far she's come, how big her heart is, and how small her world once was.
The Problem: She's About to Lose Her Dream Home.
Two years ago, someone who knew Lulu - a wealthy Mexican benefactor - received a home as a form of payment and offered to sell it to her for a fraction of its value: just 300,000 pesos (about $17,000 USD). In today's market, the house is worth several million pesos. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for Lulu to finally have a home of her own. She's worked tirelessly to pay off that debt, but it's taken a toll. With limited income and no reliable work since we left Mexico, she still owes around $11,000 USD. Her benefactor has been patient but is now beginning to push for repayment and may charge interest if the debt isn't paid in full soon. Because of her lack of education and financial literacy, she's at high risk of being taken advantage of in a desperate sale. We cannot let this happen!
Why Lulu Deserves Our Help!!
There are countless reasons we love Lulu, and if you've met her, you know them too. But for those who haven't, here's just a glimpse into who she is:
- Despite having very little, she shares whatever she can. We'd often send food home with her, and she'd always give some to a local widow or struggling neighbor.
- She once tried to collect money from friends to help a young girl go to college, even though she herself struggles day to day.
- She's put both of her children through school, though they now make only modest incomes and cannot help much financially.
- She is endlessly positive, faithful, and trusting - she believes deeply in God and always assumes the best in others.
- She once asked, "When will it be my turn?" after seeing blessings given to others. What she doesn't see is that she is the way God blesses others.
Lulu has spent her life giving, working, serving - never asking for anything. But now, she needs help. And we want to show her that her life matters, her service matters, and she is loved.
How the Money Will Be Used
Your donation will go entirely to pay off the remaining balance on Lulu's home - around $11,000.00 USD - so that she can own it free and clear. That is it. No frills, no extras. Just one life-changing gift: security, dignity, and peace for a woman who's given so much and asked for so little.
You Can Be Part of Lulu's Miracle
Whether you can give $5.00, $50.00, or more - every donation helps us tell Lulu, "You matter. You're not alone. We've got you."
If you've ever wondered if your small act of kindness could truly change someone's life - this is one of those moments.
