Here's our story...

I first met Lulama in 2014 when she was in the U.S. representing her organization at the International Folk Art Market and I was a volunteer artist assistant. What started as a 'working' relationship quickly turned into a beautiful friendship. I was drawn to her passion for community development, her quiet strength, and her sweet, loving personality.

We worked together again when Lulama returned to the U.S. in 2016 and 2017, and I saw her in Cape Town, South Africa (where she lives) in 2014 and in 2018.

In 2023, Lulama was blessed with a daughter after decades of believing she was infertile. Lulama was known as the mother to her community; always stepping up to help the children and teens (and women) who were struggling with unemployment, hunger, and lack of opportunity. Having her own child was a blessing she never expected.

In May 2024, Lulama's whole world turned upside down when her beloved husband, Buli, was killed in the doorway of their home by intruders. Lulama was 5 months pregnant with her second child, a son. In an instant, she found herself alone to raise her children; no husband, no income, and in mourning.

Ever since that day, Lulama has wanted to leave her home, her neighborhood, and the danger that lurks there. She told me the intruders now know she's alone and she feels like a target. Crime continues to increase. Lawlessness is everywhere.

Just this week, Lulama shared with me the exciting news that she found a parcel of land in a safe area. She would like to buy it — and build on it — and she has saved over $13,000 of the $16,000 she needs. But, she is short.

She said, "This plot is more than just land to me — it represents a safe and secure future for my children. Ever since my husband passed away, I have been concerned about raising my children in the current environment. Owning this plot would allow me to build a home where they can grow up safely and have something meaningful to inherit when I am no longer here."

Please help me help Lulama, my dear friend. I am trying to raise enough money not just to buy the land, but to build on it. Ten thousand dollars doesn't seem like enough money, and by U.S. standards it isn't....but things are different in South Africa! Our dollars go far there and there's great opportunity if one can only afford it.
