Help Loubna's Family Stay in Rabat During Crisis

Donation protected
Dear family and friends,

I am raising funds to support my beloved host family from Rabat, Morocco, with whom I have lived for roughly 6 months over the past two years. Loubna and Abdulrahman, along with their children Khadija (12 y/o) and Adam (19 y/o) have become a second family to me. They have embraced me like a daughter and a sibling, most recently during this past Ramadan when they took me in after I left Amman, Jordan, where I was studying Arabic before the regional war began.

Loubna's family has faced particularly difficult circumstances in 2026, first with Abdulrahman developing brain cancer and now with an abrupt notice from their landlord to vacate their apartment in the next several months. I, alongside my family in the U.S. have been supporting them the best we can, but their dire situation requires more support from a broader base.

Abdulrahman's work was the single source of income for this family before cancer forced him into early retirement. Loubna faces societal and systemic barriers as a married woman that preclude her from finding stable work in Morocco, so the only income she is able to generate comes from hosting international students in their home. With no reliable flow of income and incredible costs to pay for Abdulrahman's cancer treatment and an impending move, this family is struggling to stay afloat now more than ever.

Under these cicumstances, I am making two appeals on behalf of this family. 1. Donate to the cost of Abdulrahman's cancer treatment and 2. Donate to help this family afford a new apartment in Rabat.

Appeal 1: The true cost of Abdulrahman's cancer treatment is, at this point, hard to anticipate. His brain biopsy cost them 3000 USD. His medications cost around 300 USD per month. Surgery and/or drug-based treatment is an entirely different financial burden, the price of which is not yet known.

Appeal 2: Abdulrahman and Loubna's home has been in Abdulrahman's family for generations, but it has always been a rental. Their building, following the trajectory of other beach front and beach adjacent property over the last decade, has captured the attention of urban developers looking to obtain lucrative property ahead of the 2030 world cup hosted by Morocco, Portugal, and Spain. As renters with little legal recourse, Adbulrahman and Loubna's family home has become collateral in the rapid urban and commercial transformation in Rabat. Their landlord recently shared plans to buyout the current building tenants and to turn the building into a hotel. Whatever the buyout amount they receive, it will be a small fraction of the cost to begin renting a new apartment in the city. Their new monthly rent is likely to cost somewhere between 300-400 USD per months, much higher than their current fixed rent and entirely unaffordable for them.

Even so, it is of the utmost importance to Loubna to keep her family in Rabat surrounded by friends and family as her children finish their primary schooling and her husband undergoes treatment.

This family has reached a crisis point, something many of us may be able to relate to. Whether you feel moved to support this family due to their medical or housing crisis, please know that your donation will be deeply appreciated. Let's work together to make a difference for this family!

Fundraising goal breakdown: 15,000
  • 3,500 is needed to cover the initial downpayment for an apartment in their current neighborhood
  • 600 USD per months required to sustain the apartment rental and Abdulrahman's medicine (3,600 for 6 months)
  • The family is already 5,000 USD in debt for the brain biopsy, x-rays, and various other tests
  • We factored in 3,000 USD to account for upcoming chemo therapy and/or surgery costs, but the true cost remains to be seen and the fundraising goal will be updated as needed

Notice: Being that GoFundMe does not facilitate the transfer of funds to Moroccan bank accounts, all collected donations will be funneled through a U.S. bank account and sent to Loubna via Western Union.
