Help Limnaya Build a Home for Her Children

Limnaya was my host sister and counterpart during my time as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mauritania. Together, we operated a small school for girls in the town of Magta Lahjar and advocated for girls’ education—a cause that has defined Limnaya’s life.

A single mother and fierce advocate, Limnaya founded the school before I arrived and continued to run it long after I left. She has always been a pillar of her community—a source of strength, wisdom, and resilience. But now, she needs our help.

Over the past few years, Limnaya has faced enormous challenges. After surviving two car accidents and being diagnosed with breast cancer, she was forced to sell her family’s home and relocate to the capital with her two young children. Since then, she has been moving between the homes of friends and relatives—an arrangement that is not sustainable.

Her children are growing up, and they need space to feel safe, secure, and at home. Long-term guests are often expected to contribute in ways that can create an uncomfortable (and possibly unsafe) power dynamic. Limnaya and her kids deserve the dignity and independence that comes with having their own space.

Thanks to the generosity of a family member, Limnaya now has a small plot of land—just 20 square meters. With your support, she hopes to build a modest but life-changing home: a 7x5 meter khyma (tent for shade), a private toilet area, a small kitchen room, and a secure fence with a locking door. Eventually, she would also like to install a basic electrical outlet so her children can study after dark.

This home would be more than just a shelter. It would give Limnaya the stability she needs to focus on her healing and the peace of mind that her children have a place to grow up safely—and one day, inherit.
