Hello everyone!
My name is Debora and I would like to tell you my little sister’s story. Leticia is 18 months and lives in Brazil, and even though she has experienced several complications since her birth she has proven to be a real fighter.
Two weeks ago we found out that our battle isn’t over yet. My sister started having difficulties sleeping, a hard time breathing, and constantly having throat inflammations. As a teacher for kids with special needs, our mom also started to notice a delay in her cognitive development, because she was no longer able to make eye contact, to communicate or connect to other people. After going to multiple doctors, Leticia was diagnosed with adenoid hypertrophy. Due to this condition she had 70% of her respiratory system compromised and also a large damage to her hearing capabilities, which is the reason that has been causing both her breathing difficulties as well as her trouble to connect and to develop at the same pace as the other kids.
Currently, my sister needs to have a surgery to remove her tonsils and adenoid, which would solve her respiratory and inflammation problems and the medical costs for the surgery would be R$ 50.000 reais (Brazilian currency), which equals $10,000 USD. After this procedure she would have to go through a 6 months intensive treatment with a phonoaudiologist to overcome the hearing and speaking complications she has been suffering from and to prevent future problems which will hopefully lead to full recovery, giving her the chance to move on as a healthy child.
My family has been doing everything within their reach to provide my sister with a safe and loving environment to overcome her health issues. But my mom’s income as a teacher is nearly not enough to cover for their basic needs, and everything has been even worse due to Brazil’s current state as a consequence of COVID. With that being said, my mom has been struggling financially to pay for my sister’s past medical expenses and has no funds to cover for the surgery or following treatment.
The longer we wait to perform the surgery the higher are the chances of having even more serious consequences on her health that might turn out to be irreversible, such as deformities on the face, poor sleep quality, difficulty concentrating, inhibition of growth hormone and even chronic ear infections that total loss of her hearing capabilities.
I’ve been away from home for a couple of years now, but my family means everything to me and it's really hard not to be close or have the ability to give them emotional or financial support. That’s why I’ve decided to create this campaign to raise the money to fund my sister’s surgery and help my family to protect and keep fighting with our baby girl.
