Last year, I worked a contractual job at Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore, Maryland for eight months before becoming a permanent employee. At the beginning of my third week as a permanent staff member, I suffered a stroke on November 4, 2025. I spent two weeks in the hospital and then four months in a rehabilitation center receiving therapy. I had to leave the rehabilitation center earlier than expected because my insurance would no longer cover my stay. After just 2 weeks from being home, I received a failure to pay rent documentation from my landlord. It was warranted. Him and I had been communicating the whole time. I suppose because I wasn’t physically on the property he couldnt serve me with an eviction.; which he wouldn’t have had to because by this time I was planning to move in an apartment. During this time, I was unable to work, and my savings were quickly depleted as I tried to keep up with rent.
Despite my best efforts, I am now facing homelessness. My landlord has been patient, but can no longer can allow me to stay without payment, and Baltimore City has told me there is no rental assistance available. I recently received a letter from my landlord offering to forgive everything I owe if I can move out by April 5. On top of this, I am currently in a wheelchair and there are 35 stairs in my house, which makes it very unsafe for me. I am afraid I’ll miss a step or my legs will give out. I am also having a hard time getting a home health aide and have no one to help me stay clean or assist with daily care. While this is a difficult crossroads, I believe moving could be a chance for a fresh start and to find a place that better fits my needs as I recover from my stroke. My director is holding my job for me, and I am determined to return to work as soon as I am able.
The funds I raise will help me cover moving expenses and secure a new, accessible place to live. Any support you can give would mean the world to me as I work toward stability and recovery. Thank you for reading my story and considering a donation.
