In December of 2018, the LAVA collective voted to ask a member to leave. Over the following year, we found ourselves embroiled in an increasingly complicated saga of lock-changing, lawsuits and the building being sold out from under us to a shady developer. After an emotionally and physically exhausting battle, the collective is once again the undisputed owner of 4134 Lancaster Ave.
However, for most of 2019, the collective was not able to enter the space and as a result we were not able to raise our normal operating budget through events and office space. We are starting off 2020 with almost no money and a long list of expenses (mainly unpaid bills and necessary building repairs). We are asking the community that uses and loves the space to help us out once again.
Over the last year, a lot of people went through a lot of bullshit to regain the space, some of which has left literal and figurative scars. We had to learn a lot of things in the process and make some difficult decisions. Ultimately though, we feel that LAVA is in a better place than it has been for a long time and we are confident that 2020 will be a year of healing and growth.
On Sunday, January 19th, we will be hosting a potluck fundraiser. If you can, please come by the space at 6pm. Bring food to share and money to donate if you or just bring yourself and enjoying being back in the space. This page is for anyone that wants to donate to LAVA but can't make it out. Thank you all!
