Laura has been homeless off and on for over a decade, with her most recent period of homelessness beginning in 2021. She is a mother to two children: Rosario, age 9, and a son who is almost 4. I first met Laura in the summer of 2022, when she had just returned to Utah after being sent to Texas by local shelters during the Covid-19 crisis. While in Texas, her daughter suffered a traumatic assault, and Laura, unable to keep her children safe there, returned to Utah. The trauma her daughter experienced made it difficult for Laura to trust the school system, and she struggled to find stability. My husband and I opened our home to Laura and her children, hoping to help her get back on her feet. However, because she was living with us, she was ineligible for many public resources, and her trust issues made it hard for her to accept help. After a year, we had to ask her to leave, and she returned to homelessness. Over the years, Laura has continued to visit us for comfort and support, but her challenges have only grown. This summer, her children were taken from her due to irregular school attendance, and she is now working hard to meet the requirements to regain custody. The most important step is securing stable housing. On Thanksgiving Day, Laura lost her father, and soon after, she was assaulted by a relative she had turned to for shelter. She arrived at my door in the early morning, cold and traumatized, after walking miles through the snow. Despite all she has endured, Laura is determined to move forward. She has submitted a rape kit, is pressing charges, and is seeking counseling. Today, we learned that the main barrier to her getting housing is a debt to the Ogden Housing Authority from 2021. Without paying this off in full, she is blacklisted from all housing programs. Laura is contributing what she can from her disability income, but we need help raising the rest. I am committed to helping her through every step—applications, counseling, and court appearances—but I cannot cover this debt alone. Even a small donation will help Laura get closer to stable housing and a fresh start. Homelessness is an epidemic, but every person matters. Laura is a good person who does not use drugs or alcohol; she simply needs help navigating these overwhelming challenges. Your support can help her finally break the cycle and begin to rebuild her life.
