Three months ago, the Meharena family fled a terrible situation in Eritrea and arrived in Colorado as legal refugees. We (their sponsors) have been working with them since they arrived to help them learn English and build a life in a new country. We have grown to adore this amazing family.
The financial and emotional trials of moving to another country, especially under these circumstances, are extreme. It is a long and complicated story of how many obstacles they have had to overcome to get here, and yet, the Meharena family still faces nearly impossible hurdles.
One of their sponsoring organizations, Lutheran Family Services, helps them to navigate life in America, but with limited resources.
After spending countless hours with the family, we’ve determined that the thing that would most help them launch a new life in America is a car. Some of the immediate benefits of a car for this family would include access to a laundromat (to do laundry for 9 people), the ability to more easily get to their jobs, and time to go to free English classes by cutting down on time otherwise allotted to minimal public transpiration. As it is now, the family walks long distances (in the Colorado winter!) or has to wait for rides to get to part-time jobs.
A car would also help them participate in and expand a small cleaning business that one of their daughters (who came to the US previously) has started called Gabby’s Cleaning Services. A car would be a way of providing ongoing support for the family.
Our Goal:
To raise $5000 to purchase a modest, reliable vehicle for this family. If we can surpass our goal, we could possibly buy a mini van that will fit the whole family of 9. With additional funds, we could also provide them with insurance and cleaning equipment.
Your Reward:
Those who donate will be sent regular updates on the family's progress toward their goal of complete self-reliance. For donors in the Denver area: Gabby’s Cleaning Services is offering a free cleaning of your home for those who donate $50 or more (or a 2-hour deep clean for donations of $75 or above). If you live in the denver area, be sure to leave your address when donating at any level of $50 or above.
