I’m starting something that I believe will have a meaningful impact not only for the English-speaking community in Mazatlán but also for native-owned small businesses as well.
After working with Mazatlán Film & Theater to keep the theater open this past summer, I learned from many patrons that there were needs and wants that, despite their best efforts, were not being addressed by MF&T—in part due to being outside of the scope or budget of MF&T and in part due to scheduling conflicts.
I became energized by the idea of offering programs that would fill that void by creating a welcoming, supportive, and most of all, flexible space where people can connect, learn, and thrive together in comfort all year round.
I’ve secured an incredible space in Centro Historico and am launching HoLA Maz (Home of Learning & Arts): a volunteer-run, not-for-profit (official status pending) community center.
Help me turn this:
Into this:
Our mission is to offer social meetups, affordable classes and workshops, music, theater, and community events, coworking and quiet spaces, a resource center, and a welcoming hub for tourists and newcomers.
Our community here continues to grow, but many people struggle to find their footing and feel disconnected or out of the loop. This center can change that by providing a place for people to build friendships, share knowledge, and feel at home while contributing positively to the local community.
To open our doors, I’m investing my own funds, but I’m also asking for help from people who believe in building community, supporting others, and creating something lasting.
Your donations will go toward:
- Rent & utilities during the start up process - until we are sustainable by programming
- Building a stage
- Folding tables
- Rolling stools for art classes
- Projector
- Cinema screen
- Paint & supplies
- Chairs
- Desks
- Other furniture
- Security system
- Lights and sound equipment
- Lots, lots more!
Every donation of $25 almost covers a stool. $50 covers a chair. $100 covers a folding table.
Every dollar (or peso!) makes a difference. If you can’t contribute financially, that’s totally okay! Sharing the project or offering your time as a volunteer means just as much. Please sign up for our newsletter at https://www.holamaz.org/ for updates and volunteer opportunities.
Thank you for supporting this dream and helping launch a place that will bring people together and genuinely make a difference.
With gratitude,
Kellie
