Introduction:

The Burgett Legacy Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to making culturally responsive mental health education, healing spaces, and liberation-centered programming accessible to Black communities.

We believe healing shouldn't depend on income. We believe culturally relevant mental health care should exist before crisis occurs—not only after.

Why This Non-Profit Was Organized:

Black communities consistently experience disparities in mental health care, culturally responsive services, and preventative education.

Many people never receive support because:
  • cost
  • stigma
  • lack of culturally competent providers
  • burnout
  • caregiving responsibilities
  • systemic inequities

The Burgett Legacy Foundation exists to remove those barriers.

Spotlight Programs

Burn the Cape is the Burgett Legacy Foundation's flagship initiative for Black women. Rooted in research on Black Superwoman Schema, the program helps participants examine and release the harmful expectation that they must always be strong, self-sacrificing, and emotionally invulnerable. Through support groups, educational workshops, workbooks, community discussions, and the upcoming Burn the Cape book, participants learn practical tools to prioritize their mental health, set boundaries, embrace vulnerability, and reclaim their humanity. Burn the Cape is a movement challenging generations of survival-based expectations and replacing them with healing, rest, joy, and community.

Break the Hammer is the Burgett Legacy Foundation's initiative focused on the emotional well-being of Black men. Inspired by the metaphor of the hammer—the expectation that men must always be tough, stoic, and solve every problem through strength alone—the program encourages Black men to redefine what resilience looks like. Through educational programming, support groups, community conversations, and resources grounded in liberation psychology, Break the Hammer creates space for emotional expression, healthy relationships, fatherhood, self-awareness, and healing. The initiative seeks to challenge restrictive ideas of masculinity while equipping Black men with the tools to build lives rooted not just in survival, but in connection, purpose, and well-being.

What Does "Burn the Cape" Mean?

"Burn the Cape" symbolizes rejecting these unrealistic and unhealthy expectations. It’s about letting go of the “Superwoman” role that demands perfection, constant strength, and self-sacrifice at the expense of one's well-being. By "burning the cape," we encourage Black women to embrace their full humanity, to prioritize self-care, acknowledge their needs, and seek support when needed.

What does "Break the Hammer" Mean?

The name Break the Hammer challenges the expectation that Black men must always be hard, unbreakable, and solve every problem through toughness alone. The "hammer" represents rigid ideas of masculinity that discourage emotional expression, vulnerability, and help-seeking. Breaking the hammer is about redefining strength while inviting Black men the opportunity to recognize that courage includes asking for support, expressing emotion, building healthy relationships, and choosing healing alongside resilience.

I would love to learn more about what you guys do every week. Are you going to share progress?

Absolutely! To keep everyone informed and involved, I will go live each week with a different therapist who facilitates a group to share what we discussed during the session. Follow my social media channels for these updates!

You can still support us by sharing this campaign with your network, friends, and family. The more people who know about our cause, the greater the impact we can make together. Also, consider volunteering or reaching out to organizations that may be interested in supporting this initiative.

As the Foundation grows, we plan to expand into additional programs serving Black youth, families, caregivers, educators, and communities.
