We Need Legal Support to File an Injunction Against a Harmful Building Project

We are the residents of Lafayette Estates in Soundview, Bronx, and we’re standing up against a powerful development project that threatens to erase our parking, overload our transit, pollute our air, and silence our voices. Over 900 working-class families—many of us seniors, essential workers, immigrants, and longtime residents—are being pushed aside so that outside developers can profit.

A company called Soundview Empire LLC is moving forward with plans to build over 500 units on land they falsely claimed was “abandoned.” In reality, it’s a vital parking lot that hundreds of us rely on daily. This project was pushed through without proper community notice, and the very few meetings that occurred were limited to Zoom with only 100-150 people allowed in—and tenants were excluded.

We believe this process has been unethical, dishonest, and possibly illegal.

Why We’re Raising Funds

We are raising money to hire an attorney to file an injunction—a legal action to immediately halt construction while we fight for our rights. If we succeed, we can demand:

A full SEQRA (State Environmental Quality Review Act) investigation

Transparency about who really owns and profits from this land

Protection for our seniors and children from dust, debris, and overcrowding

A seat at the table before developers take over our home

We’ve already organized and gathered over 500 signatures on a community petition. We’ve spoken to elected officials. But legal action is now our only real way to stop this before it’s too late.

Legal fees for reviewing permits, shareholder violations, and SEQRA obligations

Filing fees, document collection, and formal service of court papers

Any additional costs related to legal research, housing law, and board misconduct
