Hi! My name is Kya Moore, and I’m a proud Biology major from Prince George’s County, Maryland, currently attending Baltimore City Community College. I’ve been given an amazing opportunity to study abroad in Colombia, and I’m reaching out for your support to help make this life-changing experience possible!
As someone deeply interested in the African and Afro-Latin diaspora, I’ve always been drawn to learning how history, identity, and culture intersect, especially for people of African descent across the globe. While textbooks and online sources can only take me so far, I believe true understanding comes from immersive, firsthand experiences. That’s why this program means so much to me.
Through this journey, I hope to explore the African diaspora in Colombia, learning directly from communities, elders, and students my age. We’ll be engaging in hands-on workshops, learning new skills, sharing stories, and exchanging cultural perspectives. This isn’t just about academics; it’s about growth, connection, and honoring the resilience of Black cultures worldwide.
Sociology courses have opened my eyes to how social identity is shaped by environment and history. I often ask myself: How does identity differ for people of African descent depending on where they were placed in the world? This program gives me a chance to explore that question deeply, not just in theory, but in reality.
While I’m deeply passionate about academics and cultural exploration, I also stay busy giving back and leading on campus. I proudly serve as:
- President of the Student Leadership Club
- Community Service Chair for the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS)
- Transform Mid-Atlantic Civic Fellow
and I run my own non-profit organization, focused on quality education, good health and well-being, and food insecurity in Baltimore City.
These roles have taught me the importance of civic engagement, collaboration, and making an impact beyond the classroom. I plan to carry those lessons with me to Colombia, learning from and contributing to the communities I encounter.
On a personal note, as a lifelong band kid and lover of music, I’m incredibly excited to visit Cali, the “Salsa Capital,” where Afro-Colombian music and dance thrive. Music has always been a way for me to connect, heal, and express myself, so learning about its roots and meanings in a new cultural context is something I’m truly looking forward to.
This opportunity will expand my academic journey, fuel my passion for culture and history, and allow me to grow in ways I can’t even imagine yet. Your support will help cover travel, insurance, and program costs. Any contribution, no matter the size, brings me one step closer to this dream.
Thank you for helping me make this journey possible.
With gratitude,
Kya Moore
