Wah gwaan, as they say in Jamaica. For those of you that do not know me, my name is Kim Acton. I have traveled throughout the Caribbean over 30 years. Jamaica’s saying, “Out of Many, One People,” couldn’t be a truer statement. The love, dignity, and respect that Jamaicans possess is something I wish everyone could experience once in their lifetime. Jamaica and her people hold a very special place in my heart. For those that know me, you know how deep my love for Jamaica goes. It’s home to so many of my loved ones.
I've been traveling to Negril for several years and have become close friends with so many people. Minimum wage on island for a 40 hour work week earns them just $100.26 in USD. The struggle is real. Now they will have to rebuild, and money won’t run because of damage caused by Hurricane Melissa.
The west end of the was shredded, and I’ve yet to hear from my loved ones in Negril. Foreign entities are swooping in offering to buy the devastated properties. Jamaicans don’t have the financial resources to rebuild, and my fears of them selling their generational properties looms heavy on the horizon.
I was scheduled to go to Negril on 11/15 for vacation. If the airport has reopened, I will still be going but for humanitarian efforts. USD will be in high demand. It is with great love, respect, and humility that I am seeking donations to help me help those when I reach the island. No donation is too small. Every dollar counts and will go to my efforts when I’m on the island. I cannot express how catastrophic this hurricane is. So many lives and homes will be lost.
