My name is Kevin. I live in Los Angeles antics the moment surround by fires and breathing in snoke and ash. This pile of rubble is all that remains of my brother’s house. Last night, Tuesday, January 7, he was ordered to evacuate as the Eaton Fire tore through his neighborhood, destroying everything in its path. One of his three adult children, who lives nearby, rushed home. Together, they grabbed the dogs, threw whatever they could into the car, and fled.

They stayed with us last night, safe—but only physically.

This morning, we drove back to see what had unfolded over the last 12 hours. What we found was utter devastation. The house where his children grew up, the home where his husband passed away, his sanctuary—it’s all gone.

My brother is one of the kindest, most generous people I know. I love him deeply, and I adore his children—they are my family. I would do anything for them, but in this moment, I can only do so much.
