(Shared with permission) Naina and Arthur are a couple in their 80s who have lived in their home on Kentucky Ave. SE for nearly 40 years. When my husband and I first moved in next door to them, Arthur came over and introduced himself as the Mayor of Kentucky Ave, and he really was. He worked 7 days a week maintaining properties in the neighborhood until his cancer made that impossible. He's now terminally ill and entirely bedridden. And they really need our help.
About a week ago, a fire broke out on our block and one of the townhomes burned down. Naina and Arthur live directly next to the property and suffered severe soot and smoke damage. Firefighters had to break their back door off the hinges and broke their skylight, which is now leaking heavily. I’ve been helping Naina navigate the insurance process, but there’s still so much left to do. She's really overwhelmed and does not have the financial resources to deal with any of this.
With severe thunderstorms, torrential rain, and potential tornados expected in DC tomorrow, I am deeply worried about what will happen to their home. I have a few leads on contractors who can help with at least a temporary fix (hopefully at a discount), and Naina and Arthur urgently need to replace contaminated food and other immediate items. Their home still reeks of smoke ten days after the fire, is covered in carcinogenic soot, and now leaks with major storms on the way. Please contribute to help them get short-term repairs done before the storm and offset other costs associated with recovering from this incident. Your support will make a real difference for two wonderful people who have given so much to our community.
Note: I am Naina and Arthur’s nextdoor neighbor. The funds will be used to cover insurance deductibles, perform additional home repairs, replace items not covered by insurance, purchase items needed now like food (since theirs was contaminated). I will have all funds raised sent directly to Naina.
