We Are Still Here. Thanks to your generosity. Please continue to support us.

With housing rules changing in 2026, tenants need Arnold more than ever.

In the past, community donations helped keep the hotline alive, and we are deeply grateful. Those funds were used to cover essential costs, and thanks to that support, Arnold was able to continue his mission.

But today, the hotline faces a new and urgent challenge: Arnold continues to run the Housing Hotline largely on his own, without government subsidies or formal funding. While he has relied on dedicated support for research and technical needs, those services have gone unpaid for some time. This means that every call, every consultation, and every expense ultimately falls back on Arnold, coming directly out of his own pocket.

Big Changes Coming in January 2026

Quebec’s housing regulations have been released, however the rates will not be announced until January 2026. Details coming soon.

What we do know: the system will be different, and tenants will need clear guidance to understand their rights.

❓ Housing Hotline FAQ

Q1: Will my current lease be affected by the 2026 changes?

✅ No. If you signed a lease in 2025–2026, it will remain valid under the current rules until it expires in 2026. The new regulations will only apply once your lease is renewed.

Q2: What should I do if my landlord proposes a rent increase?

✅ You have the right to refuse. Send a short registered letter or email with proof of delivery to your landlord within one month of receiving the notice, stating that you refuse the increase and request TAL to fix the rent. Keep a copy for your records.

Q3: How does TAL decide what rent increases are fair?

✅ TAL uses official criteria based on landlord expenses and Quebec’s Consumer Price Index. Factors include heating costs, maintenance, repairs, and building services. For 2025, guideline increases range from 4.1% to 5.9%, depending on heating type, plus taxes, insurance, and major repairs.

Q4: Why does the Housing Hotline need donations now?

✅ Arnold runs the hotline without government funding. Every call, consultation, and expense comes out of his pocket. With major regulation changes coming in January 2026, tenants will need even more advice and guidance. Donations ensure the hotline can handle the extra workload and continue serving the community.

Q5: How will my donation be used?

✅ Your donation will go directly toward keeping the hotline operational: covering phone services, outreach, and the basic resources Arnold needs to continue his work. And as the housing system undergoes a complete revision in January, your support will guarantee that Arnold can provide the extra advice, guidance, and advocacy tenants will urgently need during this transition.

Why This Matters

That’s why Arnold’s Housing Hotline is more important than ever. As soon as the new rules are announced, Arnold will be ready to explain them in plain language and help tenants navigate the transition.
