Over the years our captains have been present for key moments in the lives of our clients and friends. Of course there have been the sailing milestones: first sails, first time at the helm, first ASA lessons, certifications, overnight sails, first time offshore or to Catalina, maybe even your first boat. But they’ve been there for personal milestones, too: marriage proposals, birthdays, celebrations of life and love. Our captains have been a critical piece in some very memorable experiences.
For many, WCM captains have become more than teachers and guides. They’ve become friends. And our friends are in trouble. The initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in much reduced business for WCM and other charter/school operations. The more recent complete closure of San Diego Bay has meant a complete loss of income for most of our captains. They’re stuck at home, like you, with no option to “work from home.” And like you, they have bills to pay, and families to support. Because of the self-employed nature of this work, most don’t even have the option to file for unemployment. It looks like new legislation might change this , but change is coming slowly, and might not actually assist our captains at all.
If you feel like a WCM captain has been someone special in your life, please consider a donation to help them make ends meet during this difficult time. There are certainly many worthy causes out there right now, but this one hits close to our hearts. And probably yours, too.
You can consider it an extra tip, a payback for the kindness, wisdom, or all around fun that was shared with you aboard one of our vessels. These are good people, facing bad times. Let’s see if we can help them out, just a bit.
100% of funds will be distributed evenly among the captains with identifiable need, as bridge funds to cover basic living expenses (rent, food, etc.) until CA/Federal unemployment assistance for independent contractors is worked out.
