WE HAVE UNTIL MARCH 11th to find her a lawyer
My grandmother has lived in the United States for over 50 years. She arrived in 1973 with my grandfather, a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War and was a U.S. citizen. Together, they built a life rooted in family, education, and service. My grandmother married, raised her children, and dedicated herself to her community. She studied at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, and remained deeply engaged in American democracy—volunteering, campaigning, and communicating with elected officials, including U.S. Senators and Presidents. She believed in the responsibility of civic participation, even as a lawful permanent resident.
In 2016, my grandmother was registered to vote by the state of North Carolina. She did not hide her status or falsify information; she relied on state guidance and was issued voter documentation despite being a lawful permanent resident. She believed she was acting lawfully. When the state charged her for voting, she fully cooperated, served her sentence, paid a fine, and completed all legal requirements. The case was resolved, and she was released.
Now, nearly a decade later, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has detained her and is seeking to deport her based on this same non-violent, non-aggravated offense—despite the fact that the state already resolved the matter and never found malicious intent. Our family is asking for help to cover the legal fees needed to fight this deportation and keep my grandmother home, where she belongs. Any support you can offer means the world to us as we work to keep our family together.
** UPDATE:
Grandma has gone to two court hearings and has been given a 3rd court day in March. We paid for a consultation which gave us two clear pathways, Removal Defense or Voluntary Departure. Unless we are able to magically raise another 11k within the next couple of weeks, we are moving forward with the Voluntary Departure which still deports her but she will be able to come back to the US under a visa in 5 years .
That being said, we need to raise at least another $1700 to cover the Voluntary Departure route. Thank you all for your support, it means so much to me to see how many people have come together to support this amazing human being.
