Mental illness is a devastating condition. We mourn as we witness the gradual decline in Maira's mental perception of reality. Maira used to be a vibrant, happy, generous, hardworking, and kind individual. I remember her giving a $20 bill to a complete stranger, despite having very little herself. She once worked as a dispatcher, a semi-truck driver, and at times held three jobs at once.
Now, Maira cannot maintain employment due to her illness. She cannot live with family because of her difficult personality and paranoia, which make most living situations impossible for her. She refuses to live with our parents after the police forcibly removed her three-year-old daughter from her at their home.
At the age of 20, Maira bought a home with her hard-earned money. We've found that her home is where she feels most comfortable. However, without water and power, her living conditions became unbearable, prompting her to leave. To her, the streets seemed cleaner than her home. And I cannot blame her—it was severe.
On May 20, 2024, Maira went missing. We feared she had been kidnapped, trafficked, or worse. It was a terrifying experience that I hope none of you ever have to endure. If Maira doesn’t find a solution, she risks becoming another forgotten individual experiencing homelessness. Her mental health condition makes her vulnerable to prostitution, drug use, and alcohol abuse, trafficking, and death. She currently abstains from drug use and alcohol abuse. In high school, she was an explorer and always aimed to do good. Despite her learning disabilities, she managed to obtain straight A's for a period of time during her high school years. Maira wouldn't dare touch alcohol let alone drugs. Her mental struggle is both mental and spiritual.
Current state laws make it extremely difficult to help the mentally ill. Because of their paranoia, many of them think that they don't have a problem and that the government is out to get them. And refuse treatment even refuse to go to a doctor to get diagnosed or take medication. As has been the case for Maira.
If you are wondering what happened to Maira's daughter. She is safe with a family member. She is a happy little girl who adores pets and enjoys coloring. We are hopeful that with treatment, and not having the stress of meeting her basic needs, that Maira can become well enough to be a part of Marilyn's life.
UPDATE: by Gods grace it was a miracle that we were able to locate Maira in the California. She was sleeping at a park in Stockton CA. She has confirmed that she left do the condition of her home. Also Mairas home went on foreclosure and sold. So we will not be able to get her to stay in her home. However any income raised will go to find her place to live nearer to my parents home, and finally enroll her in a mental health program.
Nedly mental health program in California cost $13,000 for Maira to attend and a mandatory accompanying guest. And any additional money raised will go to find permanent housing, possibly purchasing a small home for her. When dealing with a mentally ill person they can at times be unpredictable so we want to add that should anything happen to Maira, any money raised will go to her daughter Marilyn.
If you feel compelled to give to Maira's cause, we will be eternally grateful. If you can't give, we understand. We still ask that you please pray for her. The price of a soul is invaluable in the sight of God. Thank you for taking your time to read.
