My name is Rocky. I'm a long-time resident of Oakland, and a passionate participant in its vibrant and diverse DIY artistic community. I love this place and the people in it deeply. I want to see our community thrive and grow, and I believe that spaces like Crisis Club play a critical role in that growth.
Since its opening at the tail-end of the COVID lockdown, Crisis Club has provided an inclusive and radical space in Oakland's Golden Gate neighborhood. Dubbing itself a "lowbrow gallery and shop" operated by "just some freaks in Oakland," Crisis Club welcomes people of all stripes. With a focus on exhibitions from LGBTQIA+, disadvantaged, and often intersectional artists, Crisis Club has hosted some of the most unique and thought provoking gallery shows in the greater Bay Area. Aside from Gallery Shows, Crisis Club also hosts weekly events such as Zine Night, Collage Night, and "Do It Together" Craft nights— which are open to the public. The gallery also doubles as a gift shop, which contains an excellently curated collection of off-beat and often hilarious items. It's hard to look through the unique collection at Crisis Club and not find something you'll love.
Another important aspect of Crisis Club's social commitment is its focus on harm reduction and mutual aid. Crisis Club maintains a stock of Naloxone, Fentanyl Test Kits, N95 Masks, and COVID tests kits that are freely available to those in need. Crisis Club is deeply committed to supporting those who need it most in a time where austerity is normalized.
I discovered Crisis Club for myself a little over a year ago, but ever since becoming a frequent visitor I've found that my connection to this community has grown exponentially. Crisis Club has given me the opportunity to meet so many wonderful artists and friends, and I truly believe that the value it provides in our present era is immeasurable. So now, I'm asking that you help keep this dream alive. Crisis Club is struggling with bills from back-rent and repairs and needs your help to remain open to the masses. If you are unable to donate yourself, please consider sharing this fundraiser with your friends— or paying a visit to Crisis Club yourself. I know you'll see what I see.
