• If you’ve ever walked through the gates, taken a photo, or simply enjoyed knowing Castle Roy is there — quietly watching over the landscape — this is your chance to help look after it.
• Castle Roy has stood for centuries. Today, it’s cared for by a small group of volunteers who believe it should remain open, free, and available for everyone to enjoy.
• But even the strongest walls need attention.
• Every few years, the castle needs to be carefully checked to make sure it remains safe and secure. This year, that work is due. It may not be the most glamorous project, but it’s one of the most important things we do — because looking after the structure now means protecting the castle for years to come.
• We’re working with a local stonemason who specialises in traditional lime mortar — the right way to care for a building like this. To reach the higher areas safely, specialist equipment is needed, which significantly adds to the cost.
• Unlike many historic sites, Castle Roy isn’t maintained by a large organisation. While Historic Scotland supported its consolidation, ongoing care depends entirely on our small volunteer charity and the kindness of visitors.
• Day-to-day donations help us keep things going — insurance, maintenance, and general upkeep — but this kind of essential work comes around only every few years and is a much bigger challenge to fund.
• Why your help matters
• Your support will help:
• Keep Castle Roy safe for everyone who visits
• Protect its historic walls using traditional methods
• Ensure it remains open and free for future generations
• Every little helps
• Whether it’s £5 or £50, your donation genuinely makes a difference.
• Castle Roy has been part of this landscape for hundreds of years. With a bit of help from all of us, it will still be here for many more.
