Hi, I am Kayla Austin. I’m a Howard University student from the Chicagoland area who is passionate about alleviating gun violence (especially against kids). It is extremely exciting to share that Pharrell Williams’ Mighty Dream Forum and The Black Ambition Prize just awarded me a monetary award for my Gun Safety invention. I also was recently featured on Teen Vogue’s 21 Under 21 List of Young Revolutionaries You Need to Know.
Most people don’t know that I came up with ‘My Gun’s Been Moved’ when I was 12 years old. God is now opening doors for me to save precious lives by bringing my product to market. I’m so glad I never gave up. To receive this kind of support from Black Ambition as a teenager is a dream come true.
The idea came about after participating in a youth program, hearing a family member's story, and watching the news on gun violence in Chicago. I’ve had many sleepless nights thinking about how I could use technology to provide a better form of gun safety for parents to protect their children.
My Gun’s Been Moved (MGBM) provides patent-pending technology to detect if a gun has been moved and notifies the owner. The product provides a way for gun owners to monitor their weapons 24/7.
I feel strongly that my invention can save thousands of lives and eliminate serious trauma within communities across the country. Just this week 2 children found their parent’s guns and accidentally shot themselves; one died. Although I am grateful for the Black Ambition Prize, a network that provides access and opportunity to Black and Latinx entrepreneurs, this is just a portion of what I need to bring the product to market.
