This GoFundMe is set up to help my neighbor and friend, Kay De La Garza, rebuild her home after it was tragically destroyed in a fire. Kay is 71 years old and lives with her adult daughter, whom she cares for. Due to circumstances beyond her control, Kay did not have home insurance, and now she and her daughter have lost everything.
The fire was started by a homeless woman whom Kay had shown kindness to by offering food and shelter from time to time. On the night of the fire, after being asked to leave due to disruptive behavior, the woman became irate. We suspect she threw a flammable liquid against the house, and neighbors heard an explosion followed by what sounded like gunfire as the house went up in flames. The homeless woman was seen calmly walking away as the house burned. Six Fort Worth fire trucks responded to the emergency, and thankfully, Kay and her daughter made it out safely. Sadly, five newborn puppies and a beloved chihuahua perished in the fire, though firefighters were able to rescue one dog and another was found hiding in the backyard. Arson investigators are currently looking into the incident, and Channel 11 News covered the story.
Contractors have determined that the house is not structurally safe to rebuild and will need to be completely leveled before starting over. Our neighborhood has come together to support Kay emotionally and help in any way we can, but the financial burden is overwhelming. Kay is most heartbroken over the loss of irreplaceable family photos and her beloved pets. Please help us help her rebuild her life. Any contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference.
