Last year, my cousin Katia made an impossible choice no mother should have to make and fled her home in Texas with her 2-year-old son. She felt as her environment at home had become increasingly unsafe and she felt no choice but to flee and seek safety. Despite having to leave behind almost everything, as an animal lover and vet tech she refused to abandon her beloved animals, her dog, Luna, and her two cats, Bagheera and Kiky bringing them with her as she fled. She left terrified with almost nothing, taking only the oldest car she owned out of fear that she would be tracked, putting her and her son in danger. She found safety with family in California, under a protection order hoping to keep herself and her son safe as she began the legal process of separation.
What she didn’t know when she left was that her former lawyer and police failed to warn her of the legal risks. Meanwhile, her husband hired an expensive attorney and has been using the system to throw everything they have at her.
Now her son has been was taken from her back to the home she fled and she faces:
- a warrant for her arrest
- crippling child support payments dating back to the day she fled with her son
- a devastating custody ruling forcing her to return to Texas, away from her family and support system where she will only have weekend custody of her son every other week.
This latest legal motion requests that Katia lose access to her child indefinitely. If this goes through, she will not be able to see her child or even hear his voice.
Katia’s lawyer has been unreliable, ignoring communication, and doing little to help while completely draining her financially. This has left her to navigate this nightmarish situation with poor legal guidance and now her child has been taken from her.
She is desperate to fight to regain custody. In order to do this she needs a strong competent attorney.
We are asking for support to help Katia:
- Hire a strong attorney who will fight for her rights as a mother
- Cover costly legal fees to challenge the unjust rulings
- Afford court costs and relocation expenses
No mother should be punished for trying to protect her child. Katia is a loving mother who has done everything she can to keep them safe since the day they left. She fled due to concerns for their safety based on the poor advice she previously received from law enforcement and her prior attorney and is now being punished for it.

El abogado antiguo de Katia fue poco confiable, ignorando comunicación importante y solo ha consumido el dinero para pelear por su hijo. Esto la ha dejado sin apoyo y ahora sin su hijo.
Ella está desesperada por recuperar la custodia. Para lograrlo, necesita un abogado competente y fuerte.
