I’m writing this on behalf of my friend Kate and her family as they face a long and difficult road ahead. Kate was recently diagnosed with aggressive HER2+ breast cancer and is beginning an intensive treatment plan that will carry her through the rest of the year and beyond. Her first phase of chemotherapy will last 18 weeks, followed by a double mastectomy. After surgery, she will continue with a second phase of chemotherapy to finish out the year, and then begin the reconstructive process. It is an overwhelming journey, but Kate is meeting it with incredible strength and courage while doing everything she can to stay focused on her family and take things one step at a time.
Because of treatment, Kate has lost income from her work in the school kitchens and from running her bakery. At the same time, her husband is now the sole provider and will need to take FMLA so he can help care for their children and support Kate during recovery. The funds raised will help with chemo-related supplies, surgeries, medical bills, transportation to treatment, and everyday needs like food and household support for their kids while the family’s income is reduced. If you are able to help, any support would mean so much to Kate and her family. If you are not in a position to give, your prayers, kind thoughts, and sharing this fundraiser are deeply appreciated as they move through treatment, recovery, and the months ahead.
