My name is Jose Alvarez. I was diagnosed with severe autism when I was 18 months old. I am currently 18 years old.I play Oboe and English Horn and I am attending DePaul University in the Fall on Full-Ride Scholarship to pursue Oboe Performance and Sound Recording Technology! After discover my music talent myself, I'm very brave enough to play Oboe and English Horn in Depaul, along with learning how to become a Sound Engineer. I choose Music Performance and Sound Engineer in my career because I want to become a musician in the best orchestra in CSO,Mexico City or London and inspire other disabilities people who love music. I also want to be sound engineer to work with famous artists, or major music production like Sony, Disney or Universal Production.

I started The People Music School when I was 10 year old. They want me to play Oboe after my Instrument Placement. At first, I don't wanna play oboe due it not my style, but after listening to famous oboist playing beautiful songs like Morris,Dee and Welter, I decide to play oboe and keep going. The People's Music School help me learned a lot not only playing my instrument better, but also change my personality and perspective.They also give me free instrument because my family don't have money to pay expensive Oboe.(Range of Oboe Cost for Advanced Oboist is between $9,000 to $14,000)I have been used this oboe for a lot of thing like church, juries, recitals, performances, festival, band and orchestra camp, and tour. I have to get new Oboe during my time in Depaul Conservatory. As a matter of fact, The People's Music School help me improve become a better person

The People's Music School is where I have all Oboe lessons here and group classes as well in 2018 to 2025.

Back of the Yards College Prep help me prepare study a lot by getting good grades and behave well.

I also been studied in Merit School of Music Conservatory and Voice Lessons. I attend a lot of Program in Festival, Camps and Saturdays like ILMEA District 1 in 2024, All City Performance Arts at Jones in Fall 23' to Spring24', UIC Symphonic Band Camp in 23' and 25', UIC Honors Band in 23' and 24', Lakeside Pride Symphonic Band in Spring 24', Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, 20-22' and 25' and Chicago Philharmonic Side by Side 24' and 25'. I also have good time playing best songs on Oboe Masterclass in front of best oboe professor and oboe students like John Dee-Oboe Professor in Urbana Campaign, William Welter-Oboe Professor in Depaul and also Principal Oboe of Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Paul Lueders-Principal Oboist of Lyric Opera of Chicago, Lindsay Flowers- Assistant Professor of Oboe at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and Oliver Talukder-Oboe Student in Curtis Institute of Music.

Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra has also changed my life. While I play Steelpan in CYSO in 2018, I also auditioned for easiest orchestra(Debut Orchestra)and while I got rejected, it made me so upset, that I thought i will never coming back before covid happen.

During Covid, Thousands of Musicians quit due to not practicing during their free time, I decide to practice more during Covid and decide to improve more, make a great comeback myself and prove haters wrong. In 2024, I auditioned for CYSO for the last time before become senior in high school, but I decide to audition the advanced and premier youth orchestra(Symphony Orchestra)and I got invitation to play with most advanced musicians. CYSO also paid my full tuition year and Spain Tour, just by playing audition and met financial aid assistance.

Music can give me a lot of aspiration about being connected to real world society by showing my skills in front of everyone.(By Practicing a lot.) Music is one key of success and I wouldn't be alive today if music wasn't part of my identity. I play music because music is my favorite hobby, to the next level of success. I don't talk until I was 10 years old.I play music and sing because my mom added it as therapy for not being able to speak.

I started this GoFundMe to raise money for my first year expenses as a music major. DePaul will be lending me an oboe and english horn to use for the time being, however I will have many other expenses, including reeds and tools.

Me llamo José Álvarez. Me diagnosticaron autismo severo a los 18 meses. Actualmente tengo 18 años. Toco el oboe y el corno inglés, y este otoño asisto a la Universidad DePaul con una beca completa para estudiar interpretación de oboe y tecnología de grabación de sonido. Tras descubrir mi talento musical, me animé a tocar el oboe y el corno inglés en DePaul, además de aprender a ser ingeniero de sonido. Elegí la interpretación musical y la ingeniería de sonido porque quiero formar parte de la mejor orquesta de la CSO, la Ciudad de México o Londres, e inspirar a otras personas con discapacidad que aman la música. También quiero ser ingeniero de sonido para trabajar con artistas famosos o con grandes producciones musicales como Sony, Disney o Universal.

Empecé The People Music School a los 10 años. Quieren que toque el oboe después de mi práctica musical. Al principio, no quería tocar el oboe porque no era mi estilo, pero después de escuchar a oboístas famosos tocar hermosas canciones como Morris, Dee y Welter, decidí tocarlo y seguir. La Escuela de Música Popular me ayudó a aprender mucho, no solo a tocar mejor mi instrumento, sino también a cambiar mi personalidad y perspectiva. Además, me dieron el instrumento gratis porque mi familia no tenía dinero para pagar un oboe caro. (El costo de un oboe para un oboe avanzado oscila entre $9,000 y $14,000). Lo he usado en muchas ocasiones, como en la iglesia, jurados, recitales, presentaciones, festivales, campamentos de banda y orquesta, y giras. Tengo que conseguir un oboe nuevo durante mi tiempo en el Conservatorio DePaul. De hecho, la Escuela de Música Popular me ayudó a ser una mejor persona. Allí recibí todas mis clases de oboe y también clases grupales entre 2018 y 2025.

También estudié en el Conservatorio de Música Merit School y en clases de canto. Asisto a numerosos programas en festivales, campamentos y sábados, como el del Distrito 1 de ILMEA en 2024; el de All City Performance Arts en Jones en otoño de 2023 a primavera de 2024; el Campamento de la Banda Sinfónica de la UIC en 2023 y 2025; la Banda de Honor de la UIC en 2023 y 2024; la Banda Sinfónica Lakeside Pride en primavera de 2024; la Filarmónica de Jazz de Chicago en 2020, 2022 y 2025; y el programa Side by Side de la Filarmónica de Chicago en 2024 y 2025. También disfruto tocando mis mejores canciones en la clase magistral de oboe frente a los mejores profesores y estudiantes de oboe, como John Dee, profesor de oboe en Urbana Campaign; William Welter, profesor de oboe en DePaul y oboe principal de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Chicago; Paul Lueders, oboísta principal de la Ópera Lírica de Chicago; Lindsay Flowers, profesora adjunta de oboe en la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison; y Oliver Talukder, estudiante de oboe en el Instituto Curtis de Música.

La Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Chicago también me cambió la vida. Mientras tocaba el steelpan en la CYSO en 2018, también hice una audición para la orquesta más fácil (Orquesta Debut) y, aunque me rechazaron, me sentí tan mal que pensé que nunca volvería antes de la llegada de la COVID-19.

Durante la pandemia, miles de músicos dejaron de tocar por no practicar en su tiempo libre. Decidí practicar más durante la pandemia y mejorar aún más, lograr un gran regreso y demostrarles a mis detractores que se equivocaban. En 2024, audicioné para la CYSO por última vez antes de terminar el último año de preparatoria. Sin embargo, decidí audicionar para la Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil Avanzada y Premier, y me invitaron a tocar con los músicos más avanzados. La CYSO también me pagó la matrícula completa de un año y la gira por España, solo por asistir a la audición y obtener ayuda financiera.

La música me da muchas ambiciones: conectar con la sociedad al mostrar mis habilidades frente a todos (practicando mucho). La música es clave para el éxito y no estaría vivo hoy si no fuera parte de mi identidad. Toco música porque es mi pasatiempo favorito, para alcanzar el siguiente nivel de éxito. No hablé hasta los 10 años. Toco música y canto porque mi madre lo incluyó como terapia por no poder hablar.

Abrí este GoFundMe para recaudar fondos para los gastos de mi primer año como estudiante de música. DePaul me prestará un oboe y una trompa inglesa por el momento, pero tendré muchos otros gastos, como cañas y herramientas.
