My mom, Josephine, is the most beautiful soul I’ve ever known. She’s the person who would go out in the middle of the night in December with a Christmas tree, lights, ornaments, and bags of presents to perform miracles for families who had nothing for Christmas. She’s cooked exquisite meals and left them on porches for those who were hungry, paid people’s utility bills in secret, and even gifted vehicles to people in need. All of this was done quietly, with no desire for recognition or repayment—just pure kindness from her heart.

Josephine’s life hasn’t been easy. From childhood on, she’s endured unspeakable traumas and hardships that would have hardened most people, but she chose to stay in the light. She never let her past define her, and instead, she’s given everything she could to help others, even when she had nothing left herself. Now, after a difficult divorce and with no income, she continues to give by watching her grandson for free so I can work, because I can’t afford daycare. My siblings and I help as much as we can, but it isn’t enough. She needs help with everything—utilities, property taxes, food, clothes, and paying down credit card debt that she accrued just trying to survive. She’s at risk of losing her home and her vehicle, the only things she has left.
