Help Josephine Marie and her battle against SMA

On March 12 my cousin Kendra and her husband Matt welcomed sweet little Josephine Marie into the world! Last week, they received some difficult news that through her newborn screening test, she was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

“The remarkable news is that within the last few years two robust treatments have been FDA approved that significantly improve physical outcomes for children with SMA. We will find out which treatment will be most appropriate for Josephine at her appointment next week - likely starting with a spinal injection treatment course and then potentially pursuing gene therapy if she is an appropriate candidate. Regardless, treatment will begin immediately, and we will be spending quite a lot of time in Iowa City.”
