I'm Jose Guanchez, former minor league baseball pitcher for the Boston Red Sox and former DSL pitching coach for the Tampa Bay Rays.
I was born in Venezuela, grew up in Guacara and Mariara respectively and currently I live in Jacksonville, Florida.
I left my country to provide a better future for my children, but I haven't forgotten my roots and the people from my hometown.
In the last 6 years, we have helped over 500 families by providing school supplies, baseball equipment, first-need items, medicines, clothes, diapers, vitamins, and baby food. This is at no cost to the families, where the Jacksonville baseball community has been the heroes for these families back in Venezuela.
How does it work?
Collecting: We are actively collecting donations of all kinds all year round.
Packing: Once we have a good amount of items, we start packing and labeling the destination, specifying the items inside the boxes to avoid delays and issues with the Venezuelan customs department.
Shipping: We send boxes twice a year, from Jacksonville, Florida to Guacara, Carabobo.
Receiving: My mother with volunteers are in charge of receiving the boxes, making sure the number of boxes are correct and placing the boxes in a safe place for organizing.
Organizing: Volunteers help out sorting all the items inside every box, separating each item by size, age, and departments (school, medicines, clothes, sports, etc.).
Distribution: My mother is in charge of visiting the most needed families in our hometown, and with the help of the volunteers, this families are able to receive the donations of all kinds depending on each families' needs.
At no cost to the families, no requirements or preferences needed. This is how we as a community give back to those who are struggling
and we would keep doing it and the most important thing is that we do it from our hearts.
The fund we collect would be used to pay for the shipping of the boxes from Jacksonville to Guacara by sea.
To all the people who have joined us in this journey, we want to say thank you and God bless you all.
