Family, I am reaching out with hope, gratitude, and humility. After 33 years in prison, our Nephew Jose “Cuito” Garnica has finally received a life-changing opportunity: the California State Parole Board has granted him an Advanced Parole Hearing. This is something we prayed for, worked for, and dreamed of for decades.

Many of you know pieces of Cuito's story. He entered the prison system as a young man in 1991. Over the years, he has taken full responsibility for his past and committed himself to transformation. Through education, self-reflection, faith, and unwavering determination, Cuito has rebuilt himself from the inside out.

Jose’s Accomplishments & Redemption

During his time behind bars, Jose has:

Completed numerous self-help, rehabilitation, and restorative-justice programs

Become a mentor to younger inmates, encouraging them to make better choices

Strengthened relationships with family and become a source of wisdom and encouragement

Worked hard to develop emotional maturity, accountability, and peace

Maintained decades of discipline and a record of positive behavior

His transformation has been profound, and those who know him, family, friends, volunteers, and staff, have witnessed the man he has become: humble, responsible, and hopeful.

Why We Are Asking for Help

A year ago, our family hired an exceptional attorney to help Jose present the strongest case possible for parole. The legal fees total $15,000, a significant expense for our family, but one we gladly took on to give Jose his best chance at freedom.

Thanks to this attorney’s work and to Cuito's dedication, he has finally been granted the early hearing we hoped for. This is our first real opportunity in decades to bring him home.
