Hi everyone! I am John's daughter Leah and my mom, Sandy, my brother, Jackson, and I are hoping to raise some money to help my dad gain some much wanted independence!
For those who don't know, my dad, a once passionate actor, had a massive stroke in June of 2019, affecting his Broca's area and his right side, causing speech difficulties, but more prominently, motor issues. Acting became difficult, communicating is hard, moving is even harder. My father had to give up many things that made him who he was, and over the years that has taken its toll. We are hoping that, with some help, we can give him some of that back.
My dad has not been able to drive himself anywhere for nearly 7 years. Growing up my dad was always the designated driver, always opted to drive over any other form of transportation. He had to force himself to let me drive when I was learning. He enjoyed driving, simple as that. Driving was even one of his top goals when it came to his recovery. That goal was unfortunately never reached. Regaining the ability to travel independently would be a massive win for him and for those of us who care about him.
My parents made the move from Nebraska to New Mexico in search of warmer winters, drier summers, and nicer views. They achieved that and now live in the Enchanted Hills area of Rio Rancho, surrounded by beautiful trails, breathtaking views, and much warmer winters! They're only a short drive from The Block, local libraries and so many more fun things. It is our goal to provide my dad a way to enjoy these things when he wants, and not just when my mother is able to take him.
We met some vey nice people from Fat Tire Cycles on Montaño, who not only recommended this bike for him, but offered to help us modify it for his use. Modifications such as a left handed throttle and brakes, GPS tracking, and various safety features that do not come standard. They have also offered to help us maintain the upkeep on this bike so that he will have it for years to come.
We do not ask for help like this often, or lightly. All four of us would greatly appreciate any help that we may receive as we pursue this goal. I know personally that it will mean the world to my father, gaining independence like this back after so many years. He will surely be making up for all those lost years and finally get to explore his home the way he wants!
If you're curious, this is the bike we are looking to get for him!
