Help John Darge Overcome Health Challenges

Donation protected
My name is Laura, and I’m asking for your help for my dear friend John Darge, whom some of you may know as "Darge" - who I’ve been blessed to know for 43 years. Darge is a 25-year law enforcement veteran and chaplain who has dedicated his life to protecting, guiding, and serving others — both in his community and through his faith.

Throughout his long career, Darge has faced more than his share of danger and hardship in the line of duty. He has been critically injured multiple times, always putting the safety of others before his own. In 2006, he was injured while rescuing individuals from a seventh-floor building fire, risking his life to save others. On two separate occasions, he was also dragged by a car while on duty, resulting in both hips being replaced and both shoulders reconstructed.

Despite years of surgeries, pain, and recovery, Darge never stopped serving. His most recent work was as a juvenile officer, where his heart was dedicated to restoring justice for young people and helping them make better choices. Even while facing his own struggles, Darge continued mentoring kids who were going through difficult times — offering them guidance, compassion, and hope. His patience, strength, and faith have touched countless young lives.

Beyond his badge and chaplain duties, Darge has always given back to his community. He’s volunteered at soup kitchens across Chicago, including 71st and Jeffrey and 53rd and Halsted, always serving with humility and kindness.

Outside of his service and volunteer work, Darge has always found joy in music. He’s an incredible drummer and plays in a local band called Automatic Noise. Whether he’s keeping rhythm on stage or lifting someone’s spirits off duty, Darge’s love for music and people shines through. His energy, humor, and heart have always brought people together — both in the community and through his music.

In 2024, Darge’s health took a devastating turn. Doctors discovered an inoperable brain tumor attached to a major artery. Around the same time, he lost feeling in his right leg, which required spinal cord surgery. Then, in the summer of 2025, his gallbladder ruptured, causing severe and ongoing gastrointestinal issues that remain difficult to control. He now receives infusion treatments, each costing about $9,000 per injection, to manage his condition.

Just this week, Darge was rushed back to the hospital after suffering a bleeding ulcer attack. He has undergone additional tests, and his doctors have determined that he will soon require another major back and spinal surgery. His health challenges have been relentless, and the physical and financial toll has become overwhelming.

After decades of service and sacrifice, Darge’s doctors have told him he must apply for Social Security Disability, as his health has made it impossible to continue the demanding work of law enforcement.

Darge’s beautiful wife, Jacqueline, continues to work and do everything she can to support their household, but the loss of John’s income and the overwhelming medical expenses have created a financial gap that’s impossible to manage alone.

He is also a devoted father of three daughters and one son, and a loving grandfather who cherishes every moment with his family. He has two brothers, a sister, and a mother whom he also helps whenever he can. Even now, through all his pain and uncertainty, Darge continues to think of others first — always putting his family, faith, and community ahead of himself.

It took a lot for Darge to agree to this fundraiser. He told me he feels embarrassed that he wasn’t financially prepared for all of this, but the truth is, no one could ever be ready for what he’s endured. Darge has spent his entire life taking care of others — now it’s our turn to take care of him.

All donations will go directly toward his medical treatments, recovery costs, future surgeries, and essential living expenses while he and Jacqueline navigate this incredibly difficult time. Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a real difference. If you can’t donate, please consider sharing this page to help spread the word.

Darge has given so much of himself over the years — to his family, his faith, his community, and the young people he’s mentored. Let’s come together to return that same love, kindness, and support to him and his family.

With love and gratitude,
Laura
