Help Joe Provide for His Family and Keep Their Home

Joe has always been the one others lean on.

For the last two and a half years, Joe has been the full-time caregiver for his elderly mother and uncle—both living with dementia and both needing round-the-clock care. He bathes them, feeds them, changes his uncle’s diapers, manages medications, transports them to doctors, and keeps the peace between two fragile, feisty souls—completely on his own.

There is no other family helping. The only sibling left hasn’t checked in for months, and despite deep pain and disappointment, Joe continues to show up with love and compassion.

He tells me often:

“I’m just trying to survive day by day.”

And he’s been doing that—without a car, without income of his own, and without even the most basic support.

Why Joe Needs Help Now

Joe’s mother and uncle receive small Social Security and pension checks, which help cover the mortgage—but not much else. Ironically, those modest payments are just enough to disqualify them from most forms of government assistance, including Medi-Cal, in-home caregiver support, or community services.

Joe has tried every resource he can find, but they “make too much” on paper and not nearly enough in reality.

In addition to his mom and uncle, Joe also cares for his brother, who lives with paranoid schizophrenia and depends on him for emotional and daily support.

To make things even more difficult, his uncle now experiences severe sundowning—a common dementia symptom that reverses his sleep cycle. As the sun goes down, his confusion grows. He becomes restless, agitated, and unable to sleep.

Joe is up every hour throughout the night, calming and redirecting him. The doctors have tried everything. Nothing helps. Most nights, his uncle finally sleeps for 2–3 hours around 6 a.m.—and that’s all the rest Joe gets.

This isn’t temporary. It’s every single day.

A Personal Note

My name is Gloria, and Joe has been my best friend since childhood. He’s more than a friend—he’s family. I’ve watched him give every part of himself to care for others, while quietly losing everything himself.

He is doing the work of an entire care team—with no rest, no breaks, no help. And he keeps showing up with love, simply because that’s who he is.

If you’ve ever cared for someone with dementia…
If you’ve ever felt invisible while doing the right thing…
If you’ve ever stayed when everyone else walked away…

Please help Joe.

Every donation, every share, every kind word matters. Let’s help Joe carry the weight he’s held alone for far too long.

Thank you for reading, and thank you for caring.
With love,
—Gloria
