My name is Jessica, and I’m a mother doing everything I can to provide for my kids, especially my 16-year-old son Markel, who has Down syndrome. Markel is a happy child with an old soul—he loves Burger King, playing his music, and telling me he loves me. He faces challenges with anxiety, especially in public, and sometimes his medication doesn’t agree with him. Because of his needs, I can’t work more than one job, and I need to be available for him at all times, especially when he has episodes at school. Recently, Markel’s Social Security check was terminated, and we’ve fallen three months behind on rent. I’m working paycheck to paycheck, and every month is a struggle to keep the lights on, food on the table, and pay the car note. I’ve tried taking on a second job, but that made us ineligible for food stamps, and the stress has started to affect my health. I’m exhausted, but I keep going because my kids depend on me.
Catching up on rent and the car note would mean stability for my family. It would allow me to focus on Markel’s needs and give us a chance to move to a better apartment where the rent isn’t based on income. I need to keep my car and phone so I can get Markel to appointments and be available if the school calls. Even a little help would make a huge difference for us. I was raised to help others and never ask for more than I need, but I’ve learned that sometimes you have to ask for help. There’s no pity or judgment in needing support, and I hope that with your help, I can get back on my feet and pay it forward to others in need.
From the deepest part of my heart, I’m asking for a little assistance—whether it’s money or prayers. Your support will help me provide for my kids and give Markel the care and stability he deserves.
